An absolute titan of modern lutherie and recently appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, Toronto-based master builder Linda Manzer stands as one of the most innovative and revered guitar makers in history. Manzer’s extraordinary journey began with a rigorous flat-top apprenticeship under Canadian master Jean Larrivée from 1974 to 1978. Recognizing her brilliant potential, she later received a grant to study the traditional art of the archtop guitar directly under the legendary James D’Aquisto in New York, making her a definitive bridge between mid-century master craftsmanship and modern acoustic design.
Manzer is perhaps globally best known for her historic, four-decade-long creative partnership with jazz icon Pat Metheny, for whom she has hand-built over 25 custom instruments. Chief among these is the legendary, 42-string, four-necked Pikasso Guitar—a build that prompted her invention of the “Manzer Wedge,” a revolutionary, ergonomic body design now adopted by top builders worldwide.
