Fred Hamilton is an improviser. He is a guitarist and bassist, a composer, recording artist, author and a Professor Emeritus of Music in the Jazz Studies Division of the University of North Texas.

Fred Hamilton is an improviser. He is a guitarist and bassist, a composer, recording artist, author and a Professor Emeritus of Music in the Jazz Studies Division of the University of North Texas.

He has performed concerts and presented workshops throughout the U.S, Canada, Sweden, South Korea and India. Some recent highlights are concerts with the Dan Haerle Quintet in 2017-2018, original big band music at Wichita State University in April, 2018, and featured workshop at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame 2018 Jazz Festival. He is a longtime member of the University of North Texas Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty and the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty 1992-2016. Fred performed concerts with the legendary santoor maestro Tarun Bhattacharya in Calcutta in January 2009, a concert in Seoul, Korea in December 2007, which was broadcast in Korea on EBS (Educational Broadcasting System) and the Ear Shot Festival in Seattle with Marc Seales in November 2005. Through the years workshops have also been presented at the University of Washington, Utah State University, University of South Florida, University of Southern California, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma, Emporia State University, the University of Colorado, Capital University, the University of Louisville and McNally Smith College.

Fred has published magazine articles in Guitar Player, compositions for big band, small group and guitar ensemble with the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press, books with Mel Bay Publications, and co-authored Rhythm Section Workshop for Jazz Directors, published by Alfred Publishing Co.

He has recorded with a variety of international jazz artists including Tim Hagens, Art Lande, Paul McCandless, Kenny Wheeler, Marc Seales, Spike Robinson, David Friesen, Shelly Berg, Ndugu Chancler, Ed Soph, Woody Witt and the Earl Harvin Trio.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of North Texas in 1989, he held full time teaching positions at Concordia College in Montreal, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Northern Colorado where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in composition. He was a member of the NORAD Command Band while in the U.S. Air Force, studied guitar with Jim Atkins in Denver, Colorado and has been playing professionally since high school.  For information on current gigs and concerts as well as available recordings visit his website at www.fredhamilton.com.
